Durham Book Club

Welcome to Durham Book Club!

Durham Book Club isn't your typical reading program - it's a year-round effort led entirely by middle school students.

It's not just about books. It's about building leaders and connecting kids through shared stories, and we hope you'll join us. While you're here, take a look around, check out what we do, and leave a note. We love to hear from you!

We want to submit a proposal to Durham's City Council!

In our June book, Small Town Pride by Phil Stamper, Jake and his friends work hard to organize a pride festival for their town because they believe that it will benefit their community.

As an organization led by middle school students, we relate to the book's emphasis on youth leadership and the importance of believing in young people's ideas. Our mission is to empower Durham’s youth while fostering leadership and camaraderie through shared reading experiences. Our goals include working to amplify the voices of young people, reflecting the values promoted in the book.

We want to know from our middle school readers: What do you think would improve our city of Durham?

We'll collect your ideas throughout June. In July, all DBC participants will vote to choose the top plan. Then, the Student Leadership Team will submit the chosen plan to Durham's City Council on behalf of all Durham Book Club participants.

July's Art & Writing Prompt - get published on our blog!

Lighting beast, rain beast, snow beast, sun beast, or wind beast

What would you choose???

What kind of guardian would you choose to be? Which beast from Spark would you have? Tell us all about your beast and how you would work with it. We would love to see your beast, too, so consider creating an illustration for us to include on the blog!

Announcing... DBCtalks

Every fall, we select four titles for Durham middle school students to read together during the summer. Our selection process is super fun, but it's also REALLY hard. There are thousands of amazing books we want to read, hundreds we could recommend to our friends, and so many incredible authors we want to meet.

This podcast is our chance to share our book recommendations with you, but we'll also talk to authors, librarians, students, and other community members about books, reading, and writing. We hope you'll want to share this experience with us!

DBC reads 2024

Join us at any Durham County Library this April, May, June, and July to talk about the book of the month. For more info, check out DBCreads 2024

We can't wait to see you!
